Alone in the Dark é a quinta seqüência da franquia que criou o gênero horror survival (jogos de terror no estilo de Resident Evil). Contando com o mesmo protagonista das versões anteriores da série, Edward Carnby, o game se passa na cidade de Nova Iorque, alternando entre a visão em primeira e em terceira pessoa.


Uma das maiores novidades é a possibilidade de dirigir veículos e explorá-los, assim como a opção de simplesmente fazer Carnby sentar no banco traseiro de um carro, atirando em seus inimigos enquanto alguém conduz o automóvel. Para obter acesso ao carro, é possível fazer ligação direta através de um quebra-cabeça, que, se não for devidamente resolvido, faz a buzina tocar, alertando os inimigos da presença do detetive
